Improve IT Operations Agility and Efficiency with Kanban

Like a manufacturing production line, IT operations require continuously improving projects and processes to be successful. This research explains how the kanban technique, which grew from manufacturing origins, can help I&O leaders make their organizations more efficient and effective.

I&O Leaders focused on enabling the bimodal enterprise with DevOps practices should:
  • Enable their team to learn kanban by selecting a comparatively simple job and building a basic kanban board.
  • Increase throughput and overcome constraints by establishing a full kanban board and including work in progress (WIP) limits for each task to prevent bottlenecks.
  • Manage proactive and reactive work by including "swim lanes" on the kanban board that clearly define emergency, urgent and nonurgent or project categories.
  • Track the progress of workflows for teams that are geographically distributed and for which a kanban board is not practical by using kanban software tools to create the board and facilitate remote collaboration.
