Serious Injury and Fatality Insights

Serious Injuries and Fatalities (SIFs) are complex and difficult to predict, but companies who understand the context of these types of injuries can better identify leading indicators that may prevent a SIF from occurring. Even though the total number of SIF cases has declined year over year, these incidents still impact a significant number of workers across all industries, making SIFs education necessary to prioritize their health and safety.
Continuing its mission to help companies understand and mitigate the unique risks workers face and navigate the challenging landscape of SIF prevention or elimination, ISN has released its latest publication, Serious Injury and Fatality Insights, that analyzes more than 94,000 recordable incidents from 2017-2021.

Key Highlights

  • The consistent leading cause of SIFs over the past five years remains contact with an object or equipment.
  • Upper extremities surpassed lower extremities as the most affected body part over the last five years.
  • July and August still see a higher number of SIFs as found in previous SIFs publications, but new data shows elevated cases in January.
  • While still reported, COVID-19 did not have a widespread impact on SIF rates for many companies.
