For high-volume, transactional deals, full automation usually makes sense. But for enterprise accounts where there are long sales cycles, multiple stakeholders, and significant relationship context, a score of 87 doesn’t tell your rep that the VP they’re about to call just changed companies last month.
Human review needs to sit at a few key points in the workflow:
- Before outreach on high-value accounts – reps should sanity-check the context behind a high score
- When a lead’s score jumps suddenly – a spike in activity isn’t always a buying signal; it could be a competitor doing research
- During quarterly model reviews – someone on RevOps should be checking whether high-scoring leads are actually converting
The AI handles pattern recognition at scale. Your reps handle relationship context. Both matter.
How to Audit Your Lead Scoring Model for Bias and Stale Assumptions
If you haven’t reviewed your model in over six months, it’s worth running through this checklist.
Step 1: Pull a conversion report by lead score bucket. Are high-scoring leads actually converting at a higher rate than mid-tier leads? If the gap is small, your model isn’t discriminating well.
Step 2: Check your input variables. List every data point feeding the model. Ask when each one was last validated against actual closed-won data.
Step 3: Look for demographic bias. If your model was trained mostly on a particular company size or geography, it may be systematically underscoring leads from segments you want to grow into.
Step 4: Review score distribution. If 60% of your leads are scoring above 70, your model’s thresholds are probably too loose.
Step 5: Talk to your reps. Ask them which high-scoring leads felt off and which low-scoring ones turned into deals. Qualitative feedback surfaces blind spots the data can’t show you.
